Public health
measures the impact it has on any children’s development all over the
world. My area of concern is being
homeless. I live in one of the coldest
places of New York City. I could not
imagine living here, and don’t have a home or a place to rest my head. I’ve seen many homeless people in card broad
boxes, make shift homes, and in the subways.
Homeless people have a greatly increase risk of death. (Hwang, 2001).
People who are homeless can be categorized as chronic,
deinstitutionalized or temporary homeless.
Homeless is like a domino effect around the world. The impact affects all of us. There are many things that can lead to being
homeless. As things seen to change
rapidly like hurricane Sandy, you’ll never know what can happen to your
home. I really don’t think it’s harmful
to my future work, but it does make me understand, what we have today, we may
not have tomorrow.
Children who are homeless on any given night ranges from
61,500 to 500,000 (Davey, 2004). Single
women with children represent one of the most rapidly growing represents one of
the most rapidly growing group of the homeless population (Zugazage, 2004).
Homeless or
displaced children can’t seem to form attachment to friends or teachers because
they are move around. They are lost,
isolated, and feel insecure about their new surrounding. Their education may be
lack in some area like math, and reading.
There are many other places that have this same issue:
South Africa’s Homeless Population
Homelessness has
played a firm role within South Africa’s past and present. Although the government is trying to combat
it through education/employment reforms and government paid housing, South
Africa still has a long way to go in reducing its homeless population.
Tamarah,
ReplyDeleteIt makes me so devastated to hear about children being homeless and the daily transitions they have to make just to survive. Did your articles mention anything being done to help homelessness? What kind of help is available to homeless children in New York? I don't see a lot of this in our community, though we have had a lot of migrant workers here in the past. Our school system did have some resources available to help these children. So sad - it breaks my heart to hear about children living on the streets. :(
There are places like shelters,or family shelters. The children are so lost in the system when staying at these places. Most families have problems living at shelters like stealing, fights, and over crowding. I think, people come from different states to get the help that need in New York.
DeleteI unfortunately over the past few years of teaching have had a few homeless families in my classroom. One was due to a house fire, one was living out of a car, another in a hotel. I pass a would say a dozen homeless adults on my way to and from work each day. It's heartbreaking to me to try to teach these children and I do the best that I can because they are more worried about where they are going to sleep or when they are going to eat next. I wish I knew of a better way to help them.
